Making the job hunt Your Job
Making the job hunt Your Job Job-hunting has never been a walk in the park, and these days, itâs even harder. Youâre staring down the barrel of double-digit inflation rates, and unemployment statistics are showing numbers that have never been higher. How do you get a job, then? Well, you treat every minute that youâre unemployed like you still have a job, and you do: The job of finding yourself a job. First things first, take a hint from the old adage, âDress for the job you want, not the job you have.â Right now, the job you have isâ¦none. Dress every day in the clothing youâd show up in if you had the job you really want. Youâre showered, shaved, hair fixed, and nails clean. The reasons for this are simple â" youâre looking for a job, and your job right now is as Employment Professional, the person for whom work will come soon. Thereâs another big reason for being dressed professionally at home; youâll be less inclined to fall into really bad habits, including sleeping too late, lolling about on the sofa watching TV, cruising the Internet for anything not job search-related, goofing off when you should be getting a job. Not saying you have to wear a suit every minute of the day, but getting up in the morning, brushing your hair and teeth, and getting out of your sweats is a good place to start. Looking the part serves a couple other purposes. Youâll feel better if youâre looking better. Right now, your self-esteem might be a little low or a lot low, and taking care of your appearance will go a long way towards making you feel a little better about yourself in general. Confidence is key when searching for a new job. Okay, so youâre dressed up and nowhere to go? Wrong. Take a left at the kitchen and head straight for your computer. Youâre going to be performing a huge number of tasks, so maybe stop at the kitchen for a cup of coffee. Is your resume in order? Is it updated with your most recent info, professionally presented and edited for content and spelling, on good stock and ready to send by itself, or with a good cover letter and references? Do you have your references lined up? Do you know your salary requirements, in case those are requested? If you donât have all this ready, open up your word processor and knock that out. Now, get online and go to every job search site you can find and plaster your resume everywhere. Anyplace that sounds remotely like something youâd be interested in, make sure youâve researched the company and position, and have a cover letter ready to send directly to that company, every detail specifically tailored for that employer. Get on all the social networking sites you can find. Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedInâ¦Get the word out to friends, family and previous business associates that youâre seeking employment. Make sure your contact information is up to date, and youâre easy to find. Be persistent, network, treat yourself and your current position with respect, and youâre sure to land on your feet.

It might sound too much like schoolwork, but you don't have to go out of your way to talk about your experience as much as you could. The point is to make sure that a potential employer can see some of the good points about you, without you coming across as someone who has the resume written by someone else.A professional engineering resume that you can easily read would have all the da ta for at least your three years of work experience displayed in one page, while describing your qualifications. How to Quit Your Job Gracefully
How to Quit Your Job Gracefully So youâve got a new job, and youâve got to leave your current one. There are a few things you need to do before up-and-quitting: Make sure you tell your boss first. Your direct supervisor should be the first to know. It may be tempting to talk to your close friends and colleagues, but hold off because word spreads quickly. Give at least two weeksâ notice. The old adage of giving two weeksâ notice may actually be required by your company. If youâre in a higher-up positionâ"youâre senior management or you supervise a lot of peopleâ"itâll be harder to replace you, so give three or four weeksâ notice. Thank your colleagues. When you thank them for being a fun bunch to work with, use the opportunity to leave your contact information. Your colleagues are your network, and you never know when you may need them for a reference or a job in the future. Document exactly how you do your job. Your successor will thank you for it. Within reason, offer to keep in touch to help acclimate him or her to the job. Donât slack off. No matter how tempting it is to come in late or leave early in your last few weeks at a job, work as hard as ever. You donât want your last few days to leave a bad impression on your coworkers; that may come back to haunt you later.

4 Types Of Job Attitudes - Which One Are You - Work It Daily
4 Types Of Job Attitudes - Which One Are You - Work It Daily Did you know there are different types of job attitudes? Find out which one you are! Related: How To Be More Likeable At Work: 10 Things To Do Today Attitude | Noun The way a person thinks and behaves A position of the body Informal a hostile manner The orientation of an aircraft or spacecraft in relation to some plane or direction [Latin aptus apt] FACT: Attitude = Effectiveness And Success On-The-Job Thinking and behaving (attitude) influence the world around us in ways obvious and not so apparent, but the effect is REAL, nonetheless. There are four basic kinds of people in business today. They can be best characterized by their attitudes: Job Lover A person can LOVE their job and may, read trade journals, spend hours over âworking lunches/breaks,â have friends that are in the same industry, and also find time to seek out ways to even further improve work or business: By all appearances the MODEL worker â" right? WRONG. This employee, business owner, or consultant may miss opportunities by erroneously thinking that all their hard work, without a doubt will benefit them. Throwing oneself into work so fully and energetically can create blinders not only to unexpected pitfalls in the business arena, but may also keep one from fully experiencing personal opportunities. In short, all work and no play makes Jane a dull girl! Job Doer Perhaps this Jack or Jane takes a more pragmatic approach: The job as a means to an end. Working like a dog might mean more enjoyable periods of time off, the ability to pay the bills, travel, take vacations, and/or enjoy hobbies. Sometimes it is just the little things â" pride in a job well done, being responsible, just being a contributing member of society in general! Still, there is room for growth and self-examination. A job, business, or current opportunity (while it lasts!) can provide one with the basics, maybe more. Sure life is good, but, in the current climate, one must be prepared for the unexpected. Job Hater Again it does not matter the title â" owner, worker, consultant, whatever. Folks in this category may bark out orders whenever possible, complain constantly, frown consistently, and criticize coworkers, boss, company in general. One wonders not how they are able to bring themselves to get out of bed in the morning, but why they are allowed to! Typically, a person with this type of attitude has too much time and energy wrapped up in expressing these negative feelings that seem to build and explode in a never-ending torrent to consider opportunities. Blindfolded, often opportunities and anything else that could be construed as positive are missed. Job What? Most readers will admit to knowing at least one of this type, who can be summed up by their perpetual query, âWhy am I here?â They often call in sick whenever possible (especially when not), spend more time on personal business than work, miss meetings, deadlines, and are frequently late/miss work. This guy or gal is seldom a boss, but sometimes people get lucky and own businesses run effectively by the sweat of others! Regardless, one is left to wonder who benefits from this person showing up on the âjob.â Potential is buried by lack of caring and activity. Talk about hiding oneâs light under a bushel! Opportunities are not only not recognized by this type, but are literally pushed aside... Think about your attitude about work now. How is it affecting you and your opportunities â" are you prepared to make a change if you need to? Who are you as an owner, employee, boss, or consultant? How do you present to others? Creating an up to date curriculum vitae or resume help you develop a clear statement of who you are and what you have to offer to customers, employees, employers or bosses. In short, it can help you develop your own personal brand that can make you stand head and shoulders above others in your field. This post was originally published at an earlier date. 9 Qualities the Least-Liked Bosses Have in Common
9 Qualities the Least-Liked Bosses Have in Common While some anfhreres are subtly toxic, others are mora blatant in their poor behavior. Despite how subtle or obvious they are, however, there are some qualities that all bad bosses have in common. Here are nine tendencies of the least-liked bosses.1. They micromanage. No one likes a micromanager the kind of boss who is always hovering over you while you do your work, or who needs to be CCed on every email so that they can keep an eye on you. Heres how to handle a micromanaging boss if youre dealing with one in the workplace.2. They condescend.A condescending boss is someone who belittles their staff or who talks down to those around them. This shows a complete lack of respect for others. Even though youre their subordinante, they should totenstill show respect after all, theyd hired you hopefully because they trusted your experience and skills.3. They dont lead by example.A boss should be a leader, and a leader should lead by example . Bosses who show up late to work, disregard the company culture, talk over others in meetings, leave work to the last minute, etc. do bedrngnis show the qualities of a productive leader. That kind of behavior, of course, can spill over in the workplace and let others know that its OK to act that way, too.4. They dont show recognition of or appreciation for hard work. The least-liked bosses neither show recognition of hard work, nor show appreciation for hard work. While they shouldnt feel inclined to reward everyone for doing whats expected of them, it is nice to feel acknowledged for your efforts now and again. A good boss understands that positive reinforcement is a tool in their box, as well.5. They dont respect work-life balance.Bosses who dont respect work-life balance are those who are always sending late-night emails, calling on the weekends over nothing important and expecting you to work late and odd hours on the regular, despite your other obligations. Work-life balance is important not only for your health but also for the success of the company so that you dont burn yourself out.6. They discriminate. The least-likable bosses are those who discriminate against people in the office for race, gender, age, disabilities, faith and more. A boss who shows prejudice is probably breaking the company code of conduct and theyre definitely breaking the law.7. They make meetings that could have been an email.Meetings take up a lot of time in many peoples days. So a boss who makes meetings to talk about meetings or meetings that could have been covered in an email is one who doesnt make an efficient use of the companys time. And this can irk a lot of employees who already have a lot on their plates.8. They take credit for your work.A boss who takes credit for your work or never gives credit where credit is due is not a great leader. A great leader lifts others up with them. Heres how to take credit when its not given to you.9. They interrupt.Interrupting others w hile theyre speaking or budding in every conversation to share their own two cents is not a quality of a good boss. A leader should allow others to share their ideas and participate in open communication that involves just as much (if not more) listening as it does speaking.--AnnaMarie Houlis is a feminist, a freelance journalist and an adventure aficionado with an affinity for impulsive solo travel.
